Thanks for bringing this to my attention. As a visual artist AI is a bit scary and has me wondering how I can protect my artwork from AI use. I didn’t realize this about Spotify. Although I use the free version, I will be deleting this app from my devices as I just can’t support the bad behavior. AI should be used for good and not for copying others work which is seemingly what they are doing.
Exactly, much of what is happening with AI is companies are teaching the bots how to scrape "content" already out there. Crazy! It's getting harder and harder to protect our work but there is enough of a pushback happening that I'm hopeful should legal situations arise regarding theft of intellectual property (I think some artists already have taken legal action), the courts will side with the true creators, not whatever the heck these companies are trying to engineer. Thank you for reading!
Yes, legal battles will ensue for sure. Was listening to a podcast on Monday that mentioned a current legal battle.
An AI company (don’t recall which one) was using some literary works to train its AI. Some of the works had been purchased and some literary works were freely available. Court ruled that it was okay to use the purchased work because it was akin to teaching school aged children with textbooks. WTH!?! Not even close IMHO. The court hadn’t decided on the non-purchased works. At least that is my recollection.
AI is here to stay, but there where do people get the idea that it is okay to basically, mimic, borrow and steal other creatives work?
I enjoyed the article, especially as I am a musician currently recording with another musician partner who is doing the recording and engineering. We use AI plug-ins. The filters and the sounds of the 70's and 80's analog gear and famous studio tricks all have been digitized. We use our guitars and bass and our voices. We use keyboards to do drums and some percussions. Other AI is used to correct bad notes, copy and snip sections of the songs. It has replaced days of manual labor and hours of overdubbing. We still overdub our parts to make it sound huge and give it a chorus effect by naturally playing that simple AI can't do. That's the state of the music industry now. Even playing live will have a situation with digitized sounds and triggers through amps and guitars for a more natural human manipulation. It's awesome and fearsome, but AI can't replace the human experience with intuition and feelings and SPIRTUALITY.
Thank you for sharing how you and your fellow musicians are utilizing AI! It sounds like you're using tools to enhance the human experience with music, rather than replace it. I LOVE the sound of analog versus digital recording so that's really cool. Thanks so much for reading, and you're spot on, AI can never replace the intuition of artists nor the spirituality of the artist-listener experience 🙏
Thank you so much for reading! I'm hoping there is enough of a pushback that companies will slow down a bit with AI when it comes to artistry. I'm seeing enough of a fight being put up already from listeners and artists alike that it gives me hope :)
I wish I had good news for you re. artificial intelligence Rebecca, I really do, but that cow has left the barn. All my life folks have waged war with the natural world, trying to create a sterile world, with disembodied people living vicariously; a place reserved for the gods (you might agree).
The good news: the natural world is like real people making real music - often imitated but never duplicated.
Maybe AI is an expression of the natural world, created by people who are expressions of the natural world - but it will never be captain of its own soul.

Excellent post. AI and all that can go wrong, like what you have illustrated here so well, makes me sick.
