Thank you so much! I think her work will stand the test of time as well. She’s one of those poets I’ve turned to throughout my life when I’ve needed the wisdom and healing of the written word. And despite her critics, I don’t think I’m the only one who’s been deeply moved by her work. To me, she’s one of poetry’s guiding lights.
I have read several poems by Mary Oliver and am shocked that some people would call her “not a poet.” I want to read her essays, too - especially after I found this post. Excellent work!
I am absolutely a fan, as you know from personal experience. :) The highbrow sophists who attack Oliver's work will be forgotten. She will forever be remembered in the canon of real poets who shared their own spirit and incredible talent with readers around the globe. Excellent work, there, Daysie. Wish I was half the writer you are.
Whenever I read Oliver I think of you because you both share the same unchained spirit. Thank you so much for reading! But please know that you will always be an infinitely better wordsmith than I, as evidenced by our garage housing your copious amounts of published work and a portfolio we must figure out how to catalog ;)
Thank you for another inspiring essay, Rebecca! I am not surprised that you love Oliver, that she is a balm and a source of joy for you, because you once told me that you find the divine in nature, not in a building. It was as beautiful to see you sharing yourself as it was learning about the poet.
Thank you for reading Kurt! And thank you for your kind response! You hit the bullseye with your assessment—I'm quite attached to her. I held back as much as I could from a sentimental standpoint while writing the essay. Hopefully I didn't come off as too much of a "fangirl" ;) Thank you so much for sharing on your social media as well! <3
A lovely piece about Oliver! I especially like this point you make, which resounds with the direct clarity of an Oliver poem: "They have earned the right to not be taken at face value, but mind value."
Thank you so much for reading, Carrie-Ann! And thank you for highlighting that point. It's something I've been turning over in my mind lately and I finally found the words for it while writing the article :)
I really enjoyed this! 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for reading! So glad you enjoyed the essay! 😊
You’re a good writer! I’m also a Mary Oliver fan, I think her work will stand the test of time. ☀️
